Patterns

The exploration of geometric patterns is an integral part of ŞANALarc's practice of architecture and urban design. Each pattern examined in this pamphlet is specific to a commissioned architectural work; the production of the patterns always develops in tandem with design processes of the respective architectural projects.

Throughout the years of our practice, patterns have always been a delight to work with. We continue to discover their infinite ability to suprise and provoke the imagination through their behavior, communicated by means of scale, color and modular interaction. When embarking on a pattern we never know where the pattern will take the process of design inquiry. As the geometric pattern gets formalized during the materialization of an architectural work, it transforms the design inquiry itself into an experience in which infinite possibilities can be discovered.

Although the classification and categorization of patterns is an incredibly complex and nuanced field, we have tried to explain the basics of the underlying mechanisms in patterns. In the center of this pamphlet you will find a simplified glossary of grid types and pattern properties that inform our own process and practice.

This publication expresses the joy we find in patterns, both as a source in its own rght for exploration in our design consciousness as a studio, and our appreciation for existing patterns in the design of the physical world.
