Elhamra: Learning from Craft

Elhamra: Learning from Craft emerges as a comprehensive artistic research project that explores production and thought practices through craft in today's world. In their research at the Elhamra çini ceramics workshop in Kütahya, Bilal Yılmaz and Lydia Chatziiakovou focus on intersections between traditional crafts and contemporary art and culture, aiming to re-evaluate the role of craft. This research is enriched by the perspectives of figures like Julia Bryan-Wilson, Theaster Gates, Yasemin Özcan, and Artan Sadiku, each of whom brings a unique approach to craft within their discipline, redefining the role of cultural heritage in the modern age. By merging craftsmanship with art, this project raises new questions regarding production processes, social meanings, and aesthetic values, treating craft as a form of thought and creation.
